Summary of Current Status

Voice: The telephone system is a digital system with a digital switch at each campus location, capable of supporting digital and analog telephones. It includes a voice mail system. The overall system is expandable and should meet the school's requirements for the foreseeable future. It allows for four-digit dialing between all campus locations and makes use of least-cost routing of all calls. The system design supports video teleconferencing to sites both internal and external to KCC's campus locations.

Video: Some rooms on campus (particularly at the Mawby Center) are cabled for video with some use of CATV.  A compressed video system runs over the College's private intranet and connects the Battle Creek campus with the Fehsenfeld Center in Hastings, the Regional Manufacturing Technology Center (RMTC) at Ft. Custer, the Grahl Center in Coldwater, and the Eastern Academic Center east of Marshall.

Data: The administrative data network was converted from an asynchronous to an Ethernet system in January of 1999. The non-administrative data network is Ethernet based over fiber from Main Facility Distribution 1 (MFD1) in the Administration Building to MDF2 in the Mawby Center, and from the respective MFDs to the building Intermediate Distribution Facilities (IDFs). Network hardware utilizes 3Com zone switching in each IDF with 1 Gigabit available at all IDF locations. The desktop architecture is switched 100 Mbit.

Cabling: All buildings are cabled with Category 3 cabling for voice. All new voice infrastructure is installed to industry standards. All offices, classrooms and meeting rooms are cabled for data with Category 5 cabling or current industry standards. All Battle Creek Campus buildings are interconnected with 12 strands of KCC owned fiber optic cabling. The Battle Creek campus, the RMTC, and the Grahl Center are connected by eight strands of KCC owned fiber and eight strands of  fiber owned jointly with the Calhoun Intermediate School District.
