Course Prerequisites:   Before enrolling in this course, the student should be familiar with basic touch typing fundamentals and have some experience working in a windows environment with a mouse.  You will need access to a computer with Access 2007 and an Internet Browser.

Required:  Shelly Cashman Microsoft Access 2007 Comprehensive ISBN: 1428367144 You will also need one high-density, 3 1/2 inch formatted disk or a USB flash drive is preferred. The book may be ordered on line at http://www.coursedirect.com or through the Kellogg Community College bookstore at http://www.kellogg.edu

Requirements: 

Students must have access to the following:

  • Equipment:  You will need a computer that is able to access and interact with the Web. For best results, a Pentium or PowerMac with a 56 Kbps or faster modem and 256 MB or more of RAM should be considered the minimal system.
  • Software:  You will need one of the following Internet browsers: Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 or higher; Firefox; Mac users may use Safari or Firefox.
  • Internet connection: Home users need Internet access through an Internet Service Provider (ISP) that offers a reliable connection to the Internet.

Course Description

This course introduces students to the basic features of Access and presents introductory information about the Microsoft Office Specialist certification exam program.  Major topics will include:  creating a database using design and datasheet views; querying a database using the select query window; maintaining a database using the design and update features of Access; and publishing to the Internet using data access pages.

Course Goal Upon completion of this course the successful student will have (1) gained the skills necessary to start preparing for the Microsoft Office Specialist Core Access 2007 Examination and (2) learned how the Access 2007 skills acquired can be used in the business world.

Computer Access at KCC It is assumed that students enrolled in this course have at their disposal appropriate equipment and software to complete the course work and communicate with other students.  If there are problems with your equipment and/or software, it is possible to come the KCC's Campus and use the open computer lab in the Learning Resource Center.  See KCC's web site for campus maps and lab times. 
Online Submitting Materials Students will be expected to use e-mail attachments and the blackboard site for this class to submit materials.
