Course Prerequisites:  

Prerequisite - OIT 182

 

Before enrolling in this course, the student should be familiar with basic touch-typing fundamentals and have some experience working in a windows environment with a mouse. You will need access to a computer with Office 2007 and an Internet Browser.

This is an advanced level Excel course.  Students should have a working knowledge of basic and intermediate Excel features or have passed the Microsoft Office Specialist certification exam at the Core level.

Textbook Required: Required:  Microsoft Excel 2007 Comprehensive Concepts and Techniques, by Shelly,  Cashman and Quasney.  ISBN: 1-428367179. This includes the textbook and a data CD. You will also need a USB Flash Drive. The book may be ordered through the Kellogg Community College bookstore at http://www.kellogg.edu.

Requirements: 

Students must have access to the following:

  • Equipment:  You will need a computer that is able to access and interact with the Web. For best results, a Pentium or PowerMac with a 56 Kbps or faster modem and 256 MB or more of RAM should be considered the minimal system.
  • Software:  You will need one of the following Internet browsers: Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 or higher; Firefox; Mac users may use Safari or Firefox.
  • Internet connection: Home users need Internet access through an Internet Service Provider (ISP) that offers a reliable connection to the Internet.

Course Description This course introduces students to the advanced features of Excel and presents information about the Microsoft Office Specialist certification exam program.  Major topics will include: using macros and Visual Basic for Applications with Excel; formula auditing, data validation, and complex problem solving; importing data, routing changes, pivot charts, pivot tables, and trend lines; and creating a pivot table list web page using Excel.  Upon completion of this course, students will have covered all of the objectives for the Microsoft Office Specialist Expert Excel 2007 certification exam.
Course Goal Upon completion of this course the successful student will have (1) gained the skills necessary to  pass the Microsoft Office Specialist Expert Excel 2007 Examination and (2) learned how the Excel 2007 skills acquired can be used in the business world.

·        Use passwords to assign protected and unprotected status to a workbook

·        Use the macro recorder to create a macro

·        Execute a macro

·        Understand Visual Basic for Applications code

·        Customize a toolbar by adding a button

·        Customize a menu by adding a command

·        Add controls to a worksheet, such as command buttons, scroll bars, check boxes, and spin buttons

·        Assign properties to controls

·        Use VBA to write a procedure to automate data entry into a worksheet

·        Understand Do-While and If-Then-Else statements

·        Test and validate incoming data

·        Explain even-drive programs

·        Use the Formula Auditing toolbar to analyze a worksheet

·        Trace precedents and dependents

·        Add data validation rules to cells

·        Use trial and error to solve a problem on a worksheet

·        Use goal seeking to solve a problem

·        Use Excel’s Solver to solve a complex problem

·        Password-protect a workbook file

·        Use Excel’s Scenario Manager to record and save different sets of what-if assumptions and the corresponding results

·        Create a Scenario Summary of scenarios

·        Create a Scenario Pivot Table

·        Set and change the properties of a workbook

·        Import data from a text file

·        Import data from an Access database

·        Import data from a Web page

·        Import data from spreadsheet XML

·        Replicate formulas

·        Insert, edit, and remove a comment
