Course Prerequisites:   Before enrolling in this course, the student should be familiar with basic touch-typing fundamentals and have some experience working in a windows environment with a mouse. You will need access to a computer with Office 2007 and an Internet Browser.
Textbook Required: Shelly Cashman MicrosoftExcel 2007 Comprehensive ISBN:1428367179 You will also need one high-density, 3 1/2 inch formatted disk or USB Flash drive is preferred.   The book may be ordered on line at  http://www.coursedirect.com or through the Kellogg Community College bookstore at http://www.kellogg.edu.

Requirements: 

Students must have access to the following:

  • Equipment:  You will need a computer that is able to access and interact with the Web. For best results, a Pentium or PowerMac with a 56 Kbps or faster modem and 256 MB or more of RAM should be considered the minimal system.
  • Software:  You will need one of the following Internet browsers: Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 or higher; Firefox; Mac users may use Safari or Firefox.
  • Internet connection: Home users need Internet access through an Internet Service Provider (ISP) that offers a reliable connection to the Internet.

Course Description This course introduces students to the basic features of Excel and presents introductory information about the Microsoft Office Specialist certification exam program.  Major topics will include:  creating a worksheet and embedded chart; formulas, functions, formatting, and web queries:  what-if analysis, charting, and working with large worksheets; creating static and dynamic web pages using Excel; and using Microsoft's Help system.
Course Goal Upon completion of this course the successful student will have (1) gained the skills necessary to start preparing for the Microsoft Office Specialist Core Excel 2007 Examination and (2) learned how the Excel 2007 skills acquired can be used in the business world.

  • Use the AutoSum button to sum a range of cells
  • Create a simple chart
  • Use the Excel Help System
  • Use the Ask a Question box
  • Use the F1 key to get Help
  • Use the Help command on the Help Menu
  • Use the Help button on the Standard Toolbar
  • Identify and enter formulas using the keyboard and the Point mode
  • Identify the arithmetic operators +, -, *, /, %, and ^ and their order of operations
  • Apply the basic functions of SUM, MIN, MAX, and AVERAGE
  • Determine a percentage
  • Verify a formula
  • Format numeric cells
  • Change the alignment and width of a column and height of a row
  • Preview and format a printed copy of the worksheet
  • Use a Web query to get real-time data from a Web site and send e-mail from Excel
  • Understand what Microsoft Office Specialist Certification is

  • Know where to find the Core Exam Skills
  • Use the formatting capabilities to create an attractive report title for a worksheet
  • Work with segments of the worksheet

  • Use and copy absolute cell references in a formula

  • Create and format 3-D Pie chart on separate sheet
  • Rearrange sheets in a workbook
  • Use Excel to answer what-if questions
