Requirements: 

Students must have access to the following:

  • Equipment:  You will need a computer that is able to access and interact with the Web. For best results, a Pentium or PowerMac with a 28.8 Kbps or faster modem and 64 MB or more of RAM should be considered the minimal system.
     
  • Software:  You will need an Internet browser version 5 or higher, either Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer.  A word processor capable of saving and opening RTF (rich text format) documents is required (almost all popular word processing programs can do this).
     
  • Internet connection: Home users need Internet access through an Internet Service Provider (ISP) that offers a reliable, direct connection to the Internet.

Curriculum Statement:

This course will prepare you for the challenges as to what extent you are competent about your own culture and the cultures of others in your community.

Description

This course will provide the student with the knowledge and strategies to work with the various life styles, needs, and problems of different racial and cultural groups.  The content of the course incorporates important concepts and empirical findings that pertain to ethnic sensitive practice.

Objectives

  1. Discuss why it is important to acquire cross-cultural knowledge and capabilities in social work.
  2. Discuss how external and internal forces serve to sustain the role of social class and ethnicity in various groups.
  3. Analyze and explain how ethnicity influences the life course concept.
  4. Identify the values for a culturally competent social worker.
  5. Contrast the basic humanistic model with the ethnographic model.
  6. Incorporate social work approaches into the basic assumption of culturally sensitive practice.
  7. Identify some of the barriers of the helping process.
  8. Identify the characteristics of naturalistic inquiry.
  9. Discuss the importance of self-knowledge.
  10. Identify personal attitudes, beliefs, and feelings associated with cultural differences.
  11. Demonstrate the acquired knowledge and skills in group discussions and role-playing activities.

Academic Policies 

Dropping:  The administrative withdrawal process shall be initiated for those students who fail to complete the first assignment by the posted deadline.  It is of particular importance that students receiving Financial Aid complete the first assignment as noted.

"I" Grades: 

Incomplete ("I") is only given for the most extenuating circumstances. All "I" grades should be completed by the end of the semester following the semester for which the “I” was given.  

Attendance

  You will be graded on your prompt response in the discussion forum.  You will be required to respond to the posting of your instructor and then to one posting of a classmate.

Cheating

Cheating is NOT permitted. Any students caught cheating will receive NO points for the exam or quiz in which the cheating occurred, and/or will be subject to the disciplinary procedures of Kellogg Community College (at the discretion of the instructor).
