Textbook Required:   Students are required to read online articles as determined by the instructor and referenced in the Blackboard site.

Requirements: 

Students must have access to the following:

  • Equipment:  You will need a computer that is able to access and interact with the Web. For best results, a Pentium or PowerMac with a 56Kbps or faster modem and 212 MB or more of RAM should be considered the minimal system.
     
  • Software:  You will need one of the following Internet browsers:  Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 or higher; Firefox; Mac users may use Safari or Firefox. 
     
  • Internet connection: Home users need Internet access through an Internet Service Provider (ISP) that offers a reliable, direct connection to the Internet.

Description This is a one credit class lasting 5 weeks.  This course broadens student knowledge through selected topics and issues pertaining to child care.  Topics may include administration, nutrition, activities, or legal and ethical issues.  Course may be repeated for credit toward graduation up to six credit hours.
Objectives 1. Explore diversity issues as they apply in early childhood trends in society

2. Analyze and discuss hot topics in the field of early childhood education including: developmentally appropriate practice, ensuring that we prepare children in appropriate ways for their next educational experiences, incorporating literacy into early childhood experiences, curriculum and content topics, child guidance, issues of diversity.

3. Identify his or her personal beliefs in reference to hot topics and trends in the field of early childhood education

4. Research and support hot topics and trends in early childhood education through a variety of methods including: Internet/electronic research, professional journals and resources, and through a reflective study of the student's choice.

5. Write position papers on hot topics and trends in early childhood education that meet a minimum standard of proficiency.

6. Support personal arguments with sound factual information.

7. Use a personal computer to complete assignments and to research topics.

8. Work in a team to evaluate and analyze topics.

Academic Policies  Dropping:  It is the responsibility of the student to know the date by which he or she may obtain a refund of tuition and the date by which withdrawing from the course can result in a grade of "W".  The general formula is Refund of tuition - first one-tenth of class days.  Grade of "W" - Prior to seven-eighths of the duration of the class.  Specific dates are available from the Customer Service Center.
"I" Grades:  Incomplete ("I") is only given for the most extenuating circumstances. All "I" grades should be completed by date determined by Instructor. 
Attendance Developing a strong work ethic begins with one having a good attitude about attendance.  The College policy is that regular class attendance is considered an essential part of a student's educational experience and a requirement for an adequate evaluation of student academic progress.  In this online class, an absence is defined as not completing assignments by due dates for each session.
Cheating Cheating is NOT permitted. Any students caught cheating will receive NO points for the exam or quiz in which the cheating occurred, and/or will be subject to the disciplinary procedures of Kellogg Community College (at the discretion of the instructor).

Online Submitting Materials Students will be expected to use e-mail attachments and the blackboard site for this class to submit materials.
