Curriculum Statement: This course is designed to provide financial management skills for students interested in starting their own business.  It is a required course in the Entrepreneur Certificate program of study.
Description This course will provide a practical application of basic financial management principles that apply to entrepreneurs.  Specifically this will be accomplished by providing the tools necessary to maintain proper financial records to make budgetary decisions related to cash and financing needs, pricing of products or services, the payment of taxes and loans, and determining profitability to help you become a successful entrepreneur.
Outcomes Students will learn the basic tools necessary to manage the cash requirements of a business including the preparation of financial reports.

Students will also learn how to obtain necessary financing to cover cash flow needs as needed and the information needed to obtain assistance from a financial institution or equity investor.

Students will learn how to determine the price of a good or service to ensure profitability.

Grading Two tests will be given during the semester according to the schedule found under Course Documents in Blackboard.  All tests must be taken at a proctored test facility.  All KCC sites have a proctored test location and many other community colleges and public libraries also offer testing facilities.  The testing facility must have a personal computer with Internet access.  It is the student's responsibility to locate a test site.  If a location is chosen that is not a KCC site, the student is responsible for contacting the instructor and providing the name and address of the test facility, a contact person's name, phone number, and email address at least two business days prior to the student taking the test.  Tests are located within Blackboard, under Course Documents and the Tests link.  Once you click on the test you wish to take, the testing center proctor will need to enter a code in order to access the test.

Ten individual written assignments based upon the assigned readings will be given for students to complete throughout the semester.  All assignments are submitted into Blackboard for grading and feedback similar to taking a quiz.  After you have submitted your assignment make sure you print a copy of your corrected assignment for future reference.

Ten discussion board assignments will be assigned covering the application of selected course material to specific situations.

The total number of points that can be earned in this course is 400 points.

Attendance   "Timeliness" is a valuable asset to take to the job marketplace.  The Department of Business has on-time attendance, on-time assignment completion, and on-time make-up examinations as priority items in development of course requirements and evaluations.  In this course, these issues of "timeliness" are addressed as follows:

1. Regular and timely class attendance is necessary for successful completion of this course.

2. When repeated or extended absences reach levels where successful completion of the course is jeopardized, an "excessive absence" report will be sent to the student.  If the absences continue, administrative withdrawal from the course will be initiated.

3.  Students are expected to be in class, on time, at the scheduled time and date.  If a student misses a test, it is the student's responsibility to contact the instructor and arrange for a make-up test (if applicable).  Make-up tests must be completed prior to the next scheduled class.

4.  If you know in advance that you will be unable to be in class for a scheduled test due to family or business reasons, arrangements can be made with the instructor (in advance) to take the test prior to the class session.

5. The last date to withdraw from a class and obtain a refund, or the last date to withdraw from a class for a grade of W, varies depending upon the course length, start date, and ending date.  Contact the KCC Registrar's office to determine the dates that apply to this course.

Plagiarism/Academic Honesty Students are expected to comply with the college's policy on academic integrity as indicated in the KCC student handbook.
Cheating Cheating is NOT permitted. Any students caught cheating will receive NO points for the exam or quiz in which the cheating occurred, and/or will be subject to the disciplinary procedures of Kellogg Community College (at the discretion of the instructor).
