Special labs or practicum:  Laboratory activity every week; all can be done at home.

Number of assignments:  Weekly quizzes, labs, and discussion boards.  Several other assignments throughout the semester as well, including one formal laboratory report and one news article review.

Estimated time per week:  12 hours minimum

Group interaction required:  Online participation with classmates required.

Scheduled activities or self paced:  Scheduled activities.  Be prepared to have weekly assignments that are due at the end of the week.

Students must have access to the following:

  • Equipment:  You will need a computer that is able to access and interact with the Web. For best results, a Pentium or PowerMac with a 56 Kbps or faster modem and 256 MB or more of RAM should be considered the minimal system.
  • Software:  You will need one of the following Internet browsers: Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 or higher; Firefox; Mac users may use Safari or Firefox.
  • Internet connection: Home users need Internet access through an Internet Service Provider (ISP) that offers a reliable connection to the Internet.

Course Goal: This course will supply information that will help you to better understand the concepts of biology and how they relate to your life. 
Description A one semester lecture and laboratory course that emphasizes the human organism as a representative living system.  The course includes a study of the cell and energy flow maintenance, coordination, reproduction, mechanism of heredity and evolution; relationship of humans to their environments; and the impact new biological technologies may have on the future.  (NOT FOR SCIENCE MAJORS.  Satisfies one general education laboratory science requirement.)
Objectives In Biology 101, students will obtain practical information about biological processes and theories that will better enable them to critically analyze science information that they run across in the popular media.  Students will learn of biology as a human endeavor, and will also learn how to perform scientific investigations and report them in formal laboratory reports.
Grading Weekly chapter Quiz - 10-20 points each

Midterm and Final - 125 points each

One news analysis paper - 10 points each

One laboratory report - 60 points each

Weekly discussion board - 5 points each
