Course Prerequisites:   Compass score of 70 or above in reading, OR ACT reading score of 16, OR Asset score of 98 or 99 with minimum grade of  P or C, OR English 120, 151, or 152 with a minimum grade of C or better.

Fluency using the computer and software programs such as PowerPoint and Microsoft Word.

Textbook Required:   Preble, Preble and Frank.  Prebles' Artforms.  Edition: 9th Publisher: Pearson/Prentice Hall  Year: 2008

Students must have access to the following:

  • Equipment:  You will need a computer that is able to access and interact with the Web. For best results, a Pentium or PowerMac with a 56 Kbps or faster modem and 256 MB or more of RAM should be considered the minimal system.
  • Software:  You will need one of the following Internet browsers: Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 or higher; Firefox; Mac users may use Safari or Firefox.
  • Internet connection: Home users need Internet access through an Internet Service Provider (ISP) that offers a reliable connection to the Internet.

Curriculum Statement: This course may be used to fulfill the creative (humanities) requirement.
Description Art Appreciation is a survey of contemporary and traditional visual art themes. Emphasis is on current problems in communication through painting, sculpture, photography, film and architecture. May be used as humanities (creative) credit.
Objectives 1. Develop an awareness of art in his/her everyday environment

2. Assess how art affects his/her everyday life; assess the role art plays in our culture.

3. Validate art as a global experience and phenomenon

4. Incorporate a working vocabulary of terms and concepts used to produce and analyze art into his/her experience.

5. Interpret artwork through discussions, written responses and research papers.

6.  Consolidate knowledge and understanding of different artists and styles.

Academic Policies  Dropping:  It is the responsibility of the student to know the date by which he or she may obtain a refund of tuition and the date by which withdrawing from the course can result in a grade of "W".  The general formula is Refund of tuition - first one-tenth of class days.  Grade of "W" - Prior to seven-eighths of the duration of the class.  Specific dates are available from the Customer Service Center.
"I" Grades:  Incomplete ("I") is only given for the most extenuating circumstances. All "I" grades should be completed by the date determined by the Instructor. 
Attendance  Attendance is mandatory for online success; although there is no specific meeting time for this asynchronous class, the student must be able to devote a significant amount of time per week to fulfill the course requirements.
Cheating Cheating is NOT permitted. Any students caught cheating will receive NO points for the exam or quiz in which the cheating occurred, and/or will be subject to the disciplinary procedures of Kellogg Community College (at the discretion of the instructor).

Online Submitting Materials Students will be expected to use e-mail attachments and the blackboard site for this class to submit materials.
