Course Prerequisites:   Completion of General Accounting 101
Textbook Required:   Textbook: Accounting Principles, Eighth Edition, Weygandt,  

Optional:  Study Guide-Volume 2

These items can be purchased from the Kellogg Community College bookstore, either in person or by calling the bookstore at (269) 965- 4128.  You will need to give the bookstore your credit card information for the books and for a nominal additional charge they will ship the books to you via UPS.

Online Course Features and Requirements Number of tests:     There are four proctored tests which can be taken at any of the Kellogg Community College sites If you live outside the Calhoun, Branch or Barry county areas, arrangements can be made to take a proctored test at a local Michigan community college.  

Required on campus sessions:  None   

Special labs or practicum:  none

Number of assignments:  There are a number of written assignments at the end of the chapters in the textbook.  There are three discussion board questions.  For further information, see the course syllabus

Estimated time per week:  Varies by student.

Group interaction required:  None required.  Students can use e-mail and Discussion Board features within the course to communicate with each other if they choose.

Scheduled activities:  Activities are self-paced.  The student must finish the course within the time provided.  The course is divided into four equal parts and it is strongly suggested that the student finish a section at quarter intervals. 

Requirements:  Students must have access to the following

  • Equipment:  You will need a computer that is able to access and interact with the Web. For best results, a Pentium or PowerMac with a 56 Kbps or faster modem and 256 MB or more of RAM should be considered the minimal system.
  • Software:  You will need one of the following Internet browsers: Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 or higher; Firefox; Mac users may use Safari or Firefox.
  • Internet connection: Home users need Internet access through an Internet Service Provider (ISP) that offers a reliable connection to the Internet.

Description An introduction to accounting for assets, liabilities, manufacturing, financial statements, source and application of funds, taxes analysis and interpretation of statements and budgeting concepts.
Objectives Course Outcomes

1.   Explain the basic concepts involved in the recognition of revenue and expense.
2.   Explain the basic accounting for the formation of a partnership.
3.   Explain the accounting for the division of income and loss in a partnership.
4.   Explain the basic accounting for the admission, retirement, death and sale of partnership interests.
5.   Examine the accounting involved in the liquidation of a partnership.
6.   Explain the basic accounting for the corporation.
7.   Explain the basic accounting for an investor buying stock in a corporation.
8.   Explain the nature and accounting for long term corporate liabilities.
9.   Explain the basic accounting for an investor buying corporate bonds.
10. Analyze the basic elements of Federal Income Taxes
11. Explain the nature and elements of cost accounting
12. Analyze the usefulness of the statement of cash flows
13. Demonstrate the use of present value and the concepts of capital budgeting.

Grading Information/
Grading Rationale
Grades are based on comprehensive examinations which require the student to master all the material presented.  There are four proctored examinations and four collections of assignments.  Each examination will be made up of objective questions totaling 200 points and each set of assignments will have 50 points.  You will receive 15 points for doing the introduction to the class.  There are three 20 point Discussion Questions.  The total points for the course will be 1,075.  Grades will be based on total points as follows:
Grading Scale 90% of total points=A
80% of total points=B
70% of total points=C
60% of total points=D
Less than 60%=F
