At the end of this lesson, you, as a successful student, will be able to understand and to use in activities

When you finish this lesson, you will complete the Discussion Requirement requirement below.

The Definition of the Derivative

At the end of this session you will be able to

1. In your textbook, review in Section 2.7, from the bottom of page 136 through page 138, concerning slope and the tangent line.

2. In your textbook, study in Section 2.7, page 139, the discussion before Example 4.

3. In your textbook, study Section 3.1, pages 147 through the 151. Learn the definitions of the derivative found on page 147 and 146.

4. In your text, practice Example 4 on page 139 and Examples 1 and 2 on pages 148 and 149 on a separate sheet of paper without looking at the solution in the textbook. Then compare with the textbook solution to insure you understand.

5. If you have not done it, now study the notes for DEFINITION OF THE DERIVATIVE in the Session 6 notes

6. On page 155 of your textbook, practice 1, 3, 5, 7, 19, 23, 27, and 29.

The Equation of a Tangent Line

At the end of this session you will be able to

1. Review how to write the equation of a straight line using the slope-intercept form of the equation in the Session 2 notes

2. In your textbook, review Section 2,7, pages 137 and 138 for finding the tangent to a graph of a function.

3. In your textbook, study Section 3.1, Example 2(b) on page 149 practicing it on a separate sheet of paper without looking at the solution in the textbook. Then compare with the textbook solution to insure you understand.

4. In your textbook, study Section 3.1 from the middle of page 150 through page 151.

5. If you have not done it, now study the notes for EQUATION OF A TANGENT LINE in the Session 6 notes

2. In your textbook, review the "test" for continuity in Section 2.6 page 125.

3. In your textbook, study "Differentiable Function Are Continuous" on pages 154 and 155 of Section 3.1.

4. If you have not done it, now study the notes for THE DERIVATIVE AND CONTINUITY in the Session 6 notes

5. On page 157 of your textbook, practice 35 and 37.

6. On page 158 of your textbook, practice 39, 41, and 43. Notice that the instructions are at the bottom of page 157.
