How do I backup
my computer files?
The College cannot protect you from loss of files, only you are
responsible for finding and backing up all your personal files.
For this you will need to get to know your system, identify the files
you need to keep safe, and do frequent backups.
You should backup your important files at
least once a week. Events can happen even under the best of
circumstances and you need to know how to manage your data. In the
Technology Support section you will find...

Who do I call to order a computer?
This requires contacting multiple folks. First, you have to
speak to the folks who would be purchasing the equipment, most likely
your department chair or dean. Next, you should speak to the
Director of Learning Technologies as to what software you will want to
have on the computer. Software most often dictates what hardware
is necessary. Finally, you should contact the Information Services
department for the ordering and purchasing of the computer equipment.

Why can't I see my network drives?
This can be the result of a couple of situations. First of
all, you have to have your Context and Server information correct when
logging on to the Novell servers. This is especially true when
logging on to the Novell servers from a computer other than your
personal office workstation. You may also not be able to view your
"personal files" on the network drives if you have left your
computer on for a long period of time (e.g. overnight). The Novell
system will eventually disconnect you from the file servers and you will
have to log in again. For more information about accessing network
drives, visit the Novell technology support
page.

How can I keep software loaded permanently on a multimedia cart?
Each multimedia cart is equipped with a device (or special software) that
"locks" the computer and prevents permanent changes being made to the
system. The I.S. department (x4148) can "unlock" the computer so that software or other files can be permanently downloaded on
to the computer's hard drive.

Can I reserve the PDC for presentations?

presentations, department presentations, and specialized
trainings. To reserve a day and time, contact the
Director
of Learning Technologies (x2378).
Who do I call for tech support?
This one is always a tricky one. There are two technology
support groups on campus, the Information Services department and the
Learning Technologies group. The best way to determine "who
to call" is to identify whether your question relates to computer
software or hardware, or network systems.
A software question would involve
questions about the use of a particular application, like Netscape
Messenger, Blackboard or
PowerPoint. A hardware question would involve questions about
physical components of your computer, such as "Why doesn't my
CD-reader recognize that there is a CD in the drive?." Network
system questions relate to the functioning of networked software, such
as the email server or Novell network drives.
Most all questions relating to software
should be directed to the Learning Technologies group, while hardware and
network system questions should be directed to the Information Services
department.

What are Blackboard course cartridges?
Text book publishers support the use of Blackboard by providing what
are known as Course Cartridges. The cartridges are used to create
courses that have quite a bit of the text book content automatically
uploaded into a Blackboard course shell. Visit Blackboard's web
site to learn more about Course
Cartridges.
