| Blackboard
Blackboard
is a web-based course management system that allows faculty to post
course material on the web, provide prompt feedback to students, as well
as facilitate interaction with and between students. KCC faculty
utilize Blackboard to either to enhance their traditional
classroom-based instruction or deliver a course completely online.
The Learning Technologies group offers
support for Blackboard, including training workshops, to encourage faculty to
take advantage of this online learning environment.
The web address for KCC's Blackboard site is http://bb.kellogg.edu.
What is Blackboard?
Blackboard is located on a web server that is supported by both the Information Services
Department and Learning Technologies group. Blackboard
courses are password protected and only students enrolled in the courses
have full access to all course material and built-in tools. All
users (faculty and students) have to have username/password accounts in
order to access Blackboard courses.
Course shells in Blackboard provide space
for faculty to upload course-specific content, as well as utilize
built-in communication, collaboration, and assessment tools.
Faculty and students need to have computers with Internet connection and
a popular browser (e.g. Internet Explorer) to access the Blackboard
courses.
Additionally, text book publishers
support the use of Blackboard by providing what are known as Course
Cartridges. The cartridges are used to create courses that
have quite a bit of the text book content automatically uploaded into a
Blackboard course. Visit Blackboard's web site to learn more about
Course
Cartridges.

I would like to
request a Blackboard course
Faculty who are interested in developing web-based courses can request a
Blackboard course. These courses can be created in different
manners: a new empty course shell or a course created by copying
from an already existing Blackboard course.

Faculty
responsibilities when using Blackboard
When using a web-based course management system such as Blackboard,
faculty (and their students) should be knowledgeable of and adhere to
the policies relating to privacy, appropriate use, courseware use, and
archiving of student records.
Handout for
Students using Blackboard
To assist students with being able to locate and log into their
Blackboard courses - faculty can print and copy the following document.
How do faculty and
students receive Blackboard accounts?
Faculty will receive a username and password upon the initial
request for a course. This information will be emailed to the faculty member along
with other course-related information.
Accounts for students are automatically
created when they are enrolled into Blackboard courses. It is the
responsibility of the faculty member to convey
username and password
information to the students, as well as inform the students on how to
access
their course on the Blackboard server. This information is
found on our Online
Learning at KCC web site. Faculty are encouraged to provide
the web address for the Online Learning site to their students at the
start of the term.

How are my
students enrolled into my Blackboard course?
Once a course is created for an instructor, the Learning
Technologies group will populate the course with the appropriate
registered students. Registered students are identified using the
Colleague (NetTerm) database. Faculty do not have to add students
to their courses, this will be done for them.
How do I learn to
use Blackboard?
There are a number of options for learning how to use Blackboard.
