"Online Mathematic Students Interact and Problem Solve in Blackboard's Discussion Forum"

Pat Kopf
Mathematics
Instructor

Project Description
Pat Kopf, Mathematics InstructorIn an effort to increase communication between online mathematic students, I am using Blackboard’s Discussion Forums.  Students interact bi-weekly on unusual problems that often have multiple solutions.  The use of the discussion forum allows even the weakest students to participate as they are provoked by each other’s ideas.  It also requires them to communicate by putting their mathematical ideas into the written word.  Learning mathematics online could be very confining, the use of this tool forces students to interact with one another on one of the most important curricular issues in mathematics, problem solving.

Targeted Course

  • MATH 101 – Introductory Algebra

Materials Produced

  • discussion board dialogue
  • archives of previous conversations

Instructional Goals

  • develop and improve problem solving skills
  • encourage interaction among online students
  • develop problem solving strategies in weaker students through interaction with stronger students
  • incorporate writing in the mathematics classroom

Technologies Used

  • Blackboard's Discussion Board tool

Resources Used

  • no additional resources are necessary
