This process applies to all instructors
(faculty and adjunct faculty) seeking approval for the development and delivery
of an online course and payment for development of work leading to the first-time
offering of an online course.
Important
“submission deadlines” are listed at the end of this document.
- The instructor approaches the
department chair or director to discuss the idea of developing an online course.
- The instructor meets with the
Chair of the Online Course Development Committee (OCDC) or the Director of
Learning Technologies to acquire an application form and complete the
technical skills survey.
- The Director of Learning Technologies
and the instructor discuss the professional skills of the instructor related
to the development of an online course.
- Available offerings of the required
Online Teaching and Learning (OTL) course, as well as the Technical
Training workshops, will be shared with the instructor.
- The instructor and departmental
chair or director completes the department portion of the application and
recommends whether to develop the online course.
- Criteria may include but is
not limited to the following: department and program goals, level of support
by program or department, large and untapped target population, demand from
students and other clientele, available budget resources, instructor capability,
and enrollment history.
- The application form is then
submitted to the academic division dean for development approval.
- The academic division dean recommends
whether to develop the online course.
- Criteria may include but is
not limited to the following: consistent with direction and needs of the
college, course is a general education core course or applies to a certificate,
degree, or transfers to universities (MACRAO), cost benefit, and feasibility
of success.
- The application is then submitted
to the Chair of the OCDC.
- The OCDC reviews the application
and results of the technical skills survey and recommends to the Academic
Cabinet whether to develop the online course and under what conditions.
- Criteria may include but is
not limited to the following: instructor capability, consistent with direction
and needs of the college, course is a general education core course or applies
to a certificate, degree, or transfers to universities (MACRAO), cost to
benefit, and feasibility of success.
- Academic Cabinet either approves
or disapproves development of the online course.
- The Chair of the OCDC approves
the course as ready to offer online after verifying that the course meets
the College’s online course standards and is near complete development using
the process described in 7a through 7c.
- Director of Learning Technologies
and the instructor collaborate on a project plan and course design.
i.
Professional development needs of the instructor are determined
and dates for attending the OTL course and Technical Training workshops
are identified.
ii.
Design process for the course is established that ensures
high-quality instructional design and consistency with College’s online
course standards.
iii. Deliverables associated with the course development are
determined and the timeline for them is established.
iv.
The Director of Learning Technologies distributes a copy
of the project plan to the OCDC.
- Development of the course begins
upon completion of the project plan.
i.
Internal or external services needed by the instructor
are identified and procured. The instructor and Director of Learning
Technologies are jointly responsible.
ii.
The instructor develops the course following the project
plan.
iii. The Director of Learning Technologies and the OCDC monitors
accomplishments of timeline and quality of outcomes.
- The Chair of the OCDC approves
changes to the project plan or design and communicates decision to the OCDC.
i.
The Director of Learning Technologies evaluates and reports
progress to the OCDC according to the established timeline and corresponding
deliverables. Director of Learning Technologies recommends changes
in the project plan or design if necessary.
ii.
The Director of Learning Technologies reviews the evidence
of developed work and identifies when the course is near complete
development (with focused attention that the course is consistent with
College standards) and ready to be offered to students.
- The OCDC determines the course
is ready to offer using the process described in 8a through 8b.
- The instructor and Director
of Learning Technologies submit evidence of developed work to the OCDC.
- The OCDC determines that the
course is near complete development and meets the College’s online standards.
- The Chair of the OCDC coordinates
processing faculty compensation.
