Online Courses
Online courses are classes that are taught using the Internet with the
majority of the content, activities, and interactions occurring online.
Completely online courses are distance education courses; students can take the online course from
any computer that has an Internet connection and popular browser (e.g.
Netscape or Internet Explorer).
The Online
Learning at KCC web site provides a wealth of information regarding
current course offerings, technical assistance, support service information,
and an orientation to online learning for students new to distance
learning.
Kellogg Community College has organized
an Online Course Development Committee (OCDC) that provides support,
standards, and guidance for KCC's online instruction initiative.

To
deliver online courses, KCC has adopted a course management
software program known as Blackboard.
The web address for KCC's Blackboard site is http://bb.kellogg.edu.
To learn more about Blackboard or to
request a Blackboard course, please visit the Blackboard
technology support web page.
Interested in learning how to
become an online instructor?
KCC faculty who are interested in teaching online courses have a number
of options for obtaining formal education in teaching online. The
following programs are delivered via the Internet and some have a tuition or fee associated with them.
-
KCC Onlne
Teaching and Learning Course
Kellogg Community College offers a four-week course in Online
Teaching and Learning. It focuses on the issues and optimal strategies
for delivering online courses. Successful completion of this course is
required before anyone is allowed to teach a KCC Online Course. This
is a teacher-led course offered online each Fall and Spring semester.
It is also offered in the Summer, if demand allows. The link above
takes you to the Learning Technologies Training Registration page.
To enroll in the workshop, click the appropriate box. This course is
available to KCC employees only and is free.
-
ETOM Online
Teaching Certification Course
This six week online course is designed to provide participants with
the experience of being an online student while introducing them to
the pedagogical and technical issues of online teaching. While
participants may want to adapt their teaching materials and methods to
a completely online delivery, this course is also suitable for those
wishing to move only parts of their courses online (e.g. hybrid).
Course instruction is based on the quality principles/standards
identified in the
MCCAVLC Online Course Development Guidelines/Rubric. This course
is provided to faculty at ETOM member institutions. It is also
available to others on a space-available basis at a higher fee.
-
Distance
Education Certificate Program
The Distance Education Certificate Program is offered by University of
Wisconsin-Madison. In their own words, "the DECP is a comprehensive professional development curriculum
offered via distance learning formats (no travel requirements) covering distance teaching, learning, technology, instructional design,
learner support, and management. Enrollment options include self-paced track, online track, and individual courses."

Interested in developing an online
course?
KCC instructors (faculty and adjunct faculty) who are interested in
developing online courses should do the following:
- read the online course development
process,
- meet with the Director of Learning
Technologies to acquire a current application form and fill out a
technical-skills survey,
- read the online course standards
for online courses at KCC,
- seek recommendation from the
department chair/director and academic dean, and
- submit application to the Online
Course Development Committee (OCDC).
After OCDC review, the application will
be sent to Academic Cabinet for development approval. Once a
course has been approved for development, the Director of Learning
Technologies and the Online Course
Development Committee will monitor the progress of course development.
